Decongestant Purchases in Wisconsin Led to Arrest for Drug Crimes

Wisconsin residents should know that they may risk being arrested if they purchase specific types amount of over-the-counter decongestant medications within a certain period of time. Two people, a man and a woman, are now facing charges for suspected drug crimes because of this. Their situation involves purchasing products containing pseudoephedrine in an amount more than 7.5 grams within 30 days. Buying certain kinds of batteries can also lead to legal problems in some situations. The accused were reportedly observed purchasing lithium batteries as well as cold packs. Authorities say the charges were filed following a drug investigation. They also say the products the defendants purchased are often used to manufacture methamphetamine. Investigators searched a home that the two were apparently living in at the time. Interestingly, the officers say what prompted them to go to this particular residence was information they received from a national database that tracks certain types of purchases. Many Wisconsin residents would no doubt be surprised to learn that going to the store to buy cold medicine may mean that purchase information is electronically sent to a national database. In this case, the home in question was searched and those in residence arrested on suspicion of operating a meth lab. Facing charges for drug crimes in Wisconsin is no small matter. Penalties under conviction can be quite severe. Buying cold medicine, cold packs or batteries does not necessarily mean a person is guilty of a crime. These two defendants and any other person charged similarly in this state are guaranteed the opportunity to dispute the charges against them.
